Extension rods, also known as extension drill steel, extension drill rod, or extension steel, are available in both hexagonal and round cross sections. Hexagonal rods offer greater rigidity, heavier weight, and more efficient energy transfer while improving flushing. Round rods are typically lighter and commonly used in extension drilling applications. Longer steel tends to have larger diameters, with conventional extension steel featuring duplicate threads on both ends.

The carburization process hardens the entire rod surface, both internally and externally, to strengthen the rod and extend its service life.
